Why this page exists
Gains from selling Bitcoin are capital gains at the 50% inclusion rate. That is the easy part. The rest is unfamiliar territory for a generalist: same-class swaps, DeFi classification, mining income, cross-border exchange reporting, and T1135 when holdings sit on a non-Canadian platform.
If you hold more than $100k CAD (at cost) of Bitcoin on any non-Canadian-registered exchange or in self-custody controlled from abroad, you trigger T1135 foreign-property filing even with zero income that year. Most CPAs have never filed a T1135 that includes a wallet balance.
For Canadian corporations holding Bitcoin on the balance sheet the situation is tighter. Capital gains still get the 50% inclusion on the T2, but two-thirds of the taxable capital gain counts toward Adjusted Aggregate Investment Income (AAII). When a CCPC's AAII exceeds $50k the Small Business Deduction starts to claw back. A Bitcoin-experienced CPA builds the year-end FMV revaluation and a clean ACB ledger that anticipates this. A generalist will miss it.
What to ask before you hire
Have you prepared a T1135 for clients with crypto on non-Canadian exchanges or self-custody wallets?
Have you filed T2s that include direct Bitcoin holdings and the AAII impact on the SBD?
Do you maintain or review an adjusted-cost-basis ledger that handles crypto-to-crypto trades?
Do you confirm that only eligible Bitcoin ETFs go into a TFSA or RRSP, never spot Bitcoin?
